Catholic Studies Program

In partnership with the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island, the SDU Board of Governors has developed a Catholic Studies minor program to enable all students, but particularly Roman Catholics, to explore Catholic beliefs and teachings within a rigorous academic environment. Funding for the minor program is provided by Saint Dunstan's University.

 

To earn a minor in Catholic Studies, students must successfully complete at least seven courses (21 semester hours of credit). The courses must be selected in the following manner:

  1. RS 171 Introduction to Catholic Studies ( compulsory )
  2. Three courses in Catholic Thought / Theology selected from the following group.
    • RS 276 Catholic Moral Thought
    • RS 277 Catholic Social Teaching
    • RS 278 The Sacraments and Catholic Spirituality
    • RS 375 Faith and Reason in Modern Catholicism
    • RS 376 Thomas Aquinas and the Thomistic Tradition
  3. Two courses in Scripture selected from the following group.
    • RS 263 Understanding the New Testament
    • RS 273 Understanding the Old Testament
    • RS 312 Jesus and the Gospels
    • RS 371 John and the Johannine Literature
    • RS 372 Paul and the Pauline Tradition
  4. One course in Catholic History selected from the following group
    • RS 275 Catholicism and modernity : From Trent to John Paul II
    • RS 279 Catholicism in Dialogue with other Religions
    • RS 331 The History of Christianity to the Reformation
    • RS 374 Catholicism and the Arts

At least two courses in total should be at the 300 level.
