In 1831, the Island's first bishop, Angus Bernard MacEachern, founded St. Andrew's College to train young men for the Roman Catholic priesthood and to educate the future lay leaders for Catholic society. In 1855, St. Dunstan's College inherited that mandate, and for the next 114 years it strove to provide a quality Catholic education for Catholic students.
Although St. Dunstan's closed its campus in 1969, the Board of Governors of the University continues that historic mission in an effort to foster a culture of spiritually and intellectually informed Catholic citizens who live their faith in the wider society with integrity, compassion, and understanding.
In fulfilling its mandate, the Board administers or sponsors a dynamic range of programs and activities.
